John Bruton comes to cabinet DN with a wealth of political experience.
From 1994-1997 he was Irish Prime Minister (Taoiseach) and previously was Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism with key competences in sports. Until October 2009, he was Ambassador and EU Commission Head of Delegation in the United States.
Bruton is a strong supporter of European Integration and served as a leading member of the Convention that drafted the proposed European Constitution. He strongly supported proposals to give the general public a more direct say in the choice of EU leadership by allowing the public of the 27 EU Member States directly to elect a President of the European Commission.
Previously vice-President of the European People’s Party (EPP) and EU Ambassador in Washington DC, Bruton is currently Chairman of IFSC Ireland, a body set up to promote Ireland’s international financial services industry. Most recently, he was appointed Chairman of the EU Sports Platform, a non-profit organisation aimed at helping the sports world better understand why and how the EU institutions are becoming more important in influencing sports regulations.
