PAEDIATRICS: The state of play today – and tomorrow

The pharmaceutical industry seems unable to escape criticism and suspicion. Rather than being spoken about as an industry that saves lives (which it does, in the first place), it is routinely seen as a ruthless money-maker, spending too much on marketing and promotion, not enough on R&D. Accusations that it does not invest enough in paediatric medicines are but the latest chapter in this long-running story. Of course, many medicines for life-threatening conditions have not been researched sufficiently or have not been developed specifically for children. But if we look at the full picture, we will see tremendous progress in this area in the last ten years and serious commitment by pharma companies to paediatric research
